Training Etiquette and Safety
Arrive at training dressed appropriately. You should be wearing your uniform and belt - if you do not yet have a uniform then wear plain, comfortable, loose-fitting but not revealing clothing. Avoid clothing with slogans or images. Aim to obtain a uniform as soon as possible.
Remove all jewellery and watches before commencing training. Any item which cannot be removed must be taped over, to reduce the possibliity of injury.
You should always bow into and out of the training area. At the beginning of training you must bow to the instructor. If a new instructor takes over the class, you should bow to them before they start to teach you. Whenever you train with a partner, you should bow to each other, and you should again bow to each other at the end of a period of training.
Seniors should line up in the front row, with the most senior student towards the right. The remaining rows should follow the same pattern, with each row beginning from the right side of the class.
If the class has already commenced when you arrive, then you must come to the front. Await the instructor's permission to join in, then bow to the instructor. Bow to the rest of the group to apologise for interrupting the lesson, then you may join the class.
If you wish to leave the class then you must ask the instructor's permission. On returning, await the instructor's permission to rejoin the lesson.
Absolutely no swearing or foul language will be tolerated during the class or within the training area.
Avoid abrasive or argumentative behaviour. However, questions are welcome. If you do not wish to perform an exercise or technique, obtain the senior's permission to sit out of the class.
Ensure you are training safely. Do not train near to any belongings left on the floor, and always be aware of the other groups training around you.
Appropriate protective equipment must be worn during sparring. Gum shields, groin guards (for the males) and shin and instep protectors are mandatory. During sparring in gradings and competitions padded head guards are required (and usually provided by the club).
