Frequently Asked Questions

When do the classes take place?

There is usually no training over Christmas, or on bank holidays. Otherwise, unless stated, classes take place every week on the following days:

DayTimeLocation
Monday8pm - 10pmMain Hall
Thursday8pm - 10pmCommunity Room

Where are the classes?

The classes take place at Plasnewydd Community Hall, Shakespeare Street, Roath, Cardiff, CF24 3ES. The community hall is behind Riley's Pool and Snooker (near to the "Poet's Corner" pub) on City Road, Cardiff. Click here for a location map.

How much will it cost me?

The current prices are £4.50 per lesson, students/concessions £3.50. The cost of insurance/NPC membership for one year is £35, students £30. A uniform will cost £42, including P&P. Gradings cost £25 per time, but are not compulsory. Remember that your first training session is free!

Can I just turn up?

Yes, you are welcome to just come along on any day. Neither of the classes is intended to be specifically geared towards beginners, or to be particularly advanced, so just turning up when it's convenient for you to begin your training is fine. You are welcome to come along and watch one whole session, but you will be expected to join in after that point.

What should I wear?

Initially, just wear loose clothing, such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. For females, a sports support top is recommended. We train without shoes; however, if you have a foot injury you can wear light martial arts shoes (not trainers or running shoes!). If you have long hair, tie it back, and remove all jewellery, necklaces, watches, etc.

Do I need to be physically fit?

No, not initially. As Nam Pai Chuan emphasises physical fitness, you will become fit with time, but you are not expected to be on top form straight away, especially if you have not exercised for some time. If this is the case, then be prepared to endure a few sore muscles the day after each training session for the first few weeks! This will improve with time.

I have no experience - is that ok?

That's fine. While you might find that some of the techniques are difficult or feel strange at first, that's normal. You'll soon pick up the methods and ideas we are trying to teach you. Don't worry if it all seems a bit much when you come to your first lesson, it's all a matter of practice. The seniors make it look easy because they've been doing this for years!

What will I learn?

Primarily, you will learn to defend yourself, but you will also learn traditional patterns and techniques, and gain a knowledge of many areas of fighting and defence technique. You should find your self-confidence increases, along with your physical fitness, strength and flexibility. We teach punching, kicking, throws, take-downs, locks, holds, grappling, sparring, stances, blocks, acrobatic moves, escapes, drills, forms, chi-gung, nerve points and more.

What belt will I be, or what belt can I get to in X months?

Beginners are automatically regarded as white belts. After this comes 1st yellow, 2nd yellow, 1st green, 2nd green, 1st blue, 2nd blue, 1st brown, 2nd brown and then black belt. A grading is held every three months, but students are only allowed to enter for grading if they have reached a suitable level, judged by the club instructors. White belts must have been training for a minimum of two months before they will be considered for the first grading.

How long until I get my black belt?

At least four years, training at least twice a week. Perhaps it's best just to enjoy the training and not try to think too far ahead as it can take some people five years or more to reach black belt level. Getting a black belt in kung fu is a serious commitment that requires a lot of dedication and hard work.

Am I too old to start?

Probably not, if you're prepared to work hard. Our club has people in the age ranges mid-teens to mid-forties. Most of the people who join the club are in their twenties and thirties. The Cardiff University NPC club, teaching our style, once had a beginner student who was over seventy - he eventually attained his second-level brown belt! It's never too late to think about starting Chinese martial arts.

What's the social side like?

We're a friendly group, and you'll quickly become part of the club. Since training is often in pairs, you'll get the chance to meet new people each session. We organise social events and mix with the other NPC clubs in Cardiff on a regular basis.

Do you run a children's class?

Our club usually takes students from age 14 upwards. The Cardiff Central NPC club run a children's class. Follow this link for more information. The Cardiff Central club train at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Sophia Gardens.

What does the name "Nam-Pai-Chuan" mean?

It translates as "Northern-Southern Fist", in recognition of the fact that its influences include elements of both northern and southern Chinese kung fu. The name was given to the style by Grandmaster Quek, in his native Fukien dialect of Chinese, when Master Lai moved to the UK and began teaching here.
